NEW LINK WITH AN OXFORD CITY SCHOOL

This term we have developed a link with Church Cowley St James C of E Primary School in Oxford. The school council in each school have begun our partnership by looking at each school website and thinking of questions they would like to ask each other. Before Easter the school council from Church Cowley St James C of E Primary School will visit Brize Norton Primary School and we will visit their school after the holiday. We are looking forward to learning from each other. Visit our new partner school’s website here.

WORLD OF WORK SPRING 2011

This term we have been visited by parents who have come into school to talk to use about the jobs they do. Mrs Peach talked to us about being an accountant and book keeper, Mr Rae about his job as a publisher and Mr Poyser about his job in the RAF. We had lots of questions to ask them and they told us about the qualifications and training they had to have. See more photos here.

SUPPORT A CHARITY 2011

As part of our Going for Goals work in circle time each class has decided to support a charity during 2011. The children were asked to research different charities and then explain to their class why they felt each charity should be chosen. The class then voted for their charity. Our first charity day was held on Friday 4th February. Read more and see pictures here.

CHRISTMAS CONCERTS

DECEMBER 2010

This year the Infants performed "Are we nearly there yet?"  This was a fantastic modern day telling of the nativity story enjoyed by all the children, staff, family and friends.  The children looked fantastic and sang brilliantly.  Well done Class 1 & 2.  See our pictures here.

The Juniors entertained us with "Cinderella Jones", a modern twist to the traditional pantomime.  It was an amazing performance full of laughter.  Thank you Class 3 & 4.  See our pictures here.

We are very proud of the effort all of the children put in to making these performances so entertaining to watch.  Well done again.

THE CASE OF THE MISSING PAINTING

NOVEMBER 2010 (revised)

See more photo here.

This term we have been working on an exciting whole school topic, 'The Case of the Missing Painting'.  After half term the children returned to school to discover that a painting was missing from our Vincent van Gogh bedroom (The Room at Arles). We were very quickly visited by PC McCarthy who set the children their first challenge as detectives to find out who lived in the room and which painting was missing.

The children eagerly set to work researching facts about Vincent van Gogh, to use in their writing. In art the children worked on colour mixing and tried to replicate the style of van Gogh. The children used their observational features to paint self-portraits. By the end of the week the children had discovered that the missing painting was a self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh himself. PC McCarthy was very impressed.

The second challenge given to the children was to work out who had taken the painting. This was introduced by a forensic expert. All members of staff were suspects and were under close scrutiny by the children. The children carried out surveys and many science investigations to eliminate many of the suspects. This also required Class 4 children to visit Burford Secondary School to use the science laboratory, to distil soup amongst other things.

On Tuesday 23rd November, the children in Class 4 revealed who had stolen the painting. It was the boiler engineer! During the day a mystery parcel was found at the front door, marked urgent. Unwrapping the parcel, the children discovered that the missing painting had been returned with a message from the culprit.

The topic has been enjoyed by all children and even the parents have not been able to stop talking about who took the painting!

YEAR 6 VISIT BOULOGNE

20TH OCTOBER 2010

On Wednesday Year 6 joined other children from primary schools in the Burford partnership on a day trip to Boulogne. The children left at just 3.45am, after struggling to get out of bed. The group travelled on the Euro-tunnel and spent the day sightseeing, souvenir shopping and enjoyed a three course meal in a hotel. Everyone had a fantastic time and got to practise their French.  More photos can be found here.
