A SHORT GUIDE TO VICARS OF ST. BRITIUS CHURCH, BRIZE NORTON

prepared by Wendy Morgan, Secretary & Clerk, St Britius.

ST BRITIUS CHURCH, BRIZE NORTON

The church probably existed by 1074 and the earliest parts which are Norman dates from the 12 century. Until at least until the mid-16 century the church was dedicated to St Peter and the modern dedication, of St Brise, was apparently devised circa 1740 taking the name from the village. The Latin version of St Brize was adopted in the 19 century but no records have been found of its dedication. Most clergy before the late 15 century are obscure; William of Pembroke a parson in the early 13 century may have been a graduate.  Between the mid 46 and 18 centuries many clergy probably resided but between 1723 and 1858 there were three who did not. Between 1858 and 1961 all Vicars resided in the village. Between 1951- 1985 the Vicars lived in Carterton, 4981 -2003 at Minster Lovell and then from 2003 in Carterton.
