INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AWARD

    

JULY 2009
         

In July of 2009 we were awarded the International School Award in recognition of our work in promoting the global dimension across the school. This is a fantastic achievement which we hope to build upon over the coming year by strengthening our Uganda partnership and through the Comenius Project with schools in France, Germany, Spain and Poland

  

         

SCHOOL AWARDS 2009

        
         

 

This year we have achieved awards for our work in many areas. These have included Quality Basic Skills Mark (Literacy and  maths), Eco-schools Green Flag, Artsmark Silver, Activemark and the Financial Management Standard in Schools (FMSiS). In addition Tammy has been awarded 4 stars in the food hygiene ratings 'Scores on the Doors'. These awards celebrate our commitment to providing the best outcomes for children. INTERNATIONAL WEEK

  

15TH - 19TH JUNE 2009
         

From the 15th to 19th June we held our International Week. During the week we got an insight in to what it would be like to live in another country. We also looked at how our community is similar and different to others in the UK. This developed our understanding of Britain as a multi-cultural society.

During the week were visited by an artist from Ghana, an African drumming group and Tammy even cooked us an African meal. Read and see more photos here.

 

  

         

CLASS 4 RESIDENTIAL TRIP

 

JUNE 2009
         

On Monday 1st June Class 4 packed their bags and went on their four night residential to Swanage. During the week the children took part in many activities including climbing, abseiling, fencing, initiative exercises, team challenges, beech walks, aeroball and much more. All of the children had so much fun and all felt they had achieved something,  whether it was combating the fear of being away from home or jumping off a rather large wall (with harness of course)! RAF FALCON 2009 DISPLAY

  

22ND MAY 2009
         

 

On 22nd May twenty children from Key Stage 2 had the opportunity to meet the 2009 RAF Falcon Parachute Team. We walked to the RAF base and watched the Falcons land. It was so exciting! We were able to have our picture taken with them and ask many questions. We also watched a film that showed how they train. We met the RAF dogs and had all got to hold birds of prey. It was an amazing afternoon out.  More pictures here.
         

BIG TIDY UP

      

22ND MAY 2009
         
 

 

On Friday 22nd May the whole school took part in a BIG TIDY UP of our village. During the day each classes went on a litter pick around the village in support of the National campaign. It was very exciting and we managed to clear rubbish from most of the roads in the village. It was amazing the things we found including, hub caps and a tin of paint. We would like to thank those parents and village residents who support us in improving our village. See more pictures here.

During the day we also had a visit from the Wild Waste outreach team. Each class made something out of rubbish. Class 1 and 2 made envelopes, Class 3 made gift bags and Class 4 made wallets using juice cartoons. This was great fun.
     
         

AWARDS FOR ALL COOKERY CLASSES

    

SUMMER 2009
         

As part of our Awards 4 All grant we have been running healthy cookery classes for children and adults after school. This has been provided by a company called Pudding Pie, from Banbury. The children and adults have made a main course and dessert each week and had much fun together. More sessions are planned for September onwards.  See more photos here.

  

         

GROWING TOGETHER PLANTING PROJECT

  

20TH APRIL 2009
         

On the 20th April we started our planting project with Kibanga Primary School. It was so exciting! We started the day with a whole school assembly. Mr Smith asked us to guess lots of mystery seeds, some English and some from Uganda. We looked at some of the differences and similarities in the climate and weather in both countries and made predictions about what would grow best where. What was really amazing was that we telephoned Kibanga Primary School. It was great, the children played their drums to us over the phone, the headteacher talked to us and the children explained what they were doing in Lugandan and in English. We even got to ask them some questions we had.

On 20th April, following assemblies in both schools, all of the children were involved in planting the seeds. Both countries have planted the same varieties of Radish, Onion, Carrots, Courgette, Squash, Cabbage, Maize, Groundnuts and Beans. We will be photographing the seed growth every fortnight and then sending our information to each other. We will then look at why some things grow better in one country compared with another.

CLASS 2 PLANTING DAY

  

26TH MARCH 2009
         

 

As part of the topic Van Gogh's Sunflowers, Class 2 spent the day planting in the school garden. We all looked at the different types of flower and vegetable seeds that can be grown and how to plant and take care of them. We have planted some seeds in trays to be grown in the poly tunnel and others have been planted straight into the vegetable patch. We are hoping to use our produce to do some cooking at the end of the school year. We are even growing some purple carrots! Thank you to those parents who helped us. See more pics here.
         

BOOK AND DRAMA WEEK

  

9TH - 13TH MARCH 2009
         

Book and Drama week was held from 9th - 13th March. This year our theme was 'Stories From Around The World'. Each class studied a traditional story from another country including Australia, Russia, China and India. During the week we had many special visitors including a theatre production of Treasure Island; drama workshops with the actor Peter Lewis and visit from the author and illustrator, Paul Geraghty. UGANDA VISIT

  

FEBRUARY 2009
         

 

Mr Smith and Miss Gerrard visited our partner school, Kibanga Primary School from 15th to 22nd February 2009 to develop our partnership and agree on a curriculum project that we could work on together. Over the course of the week we had the opportunity to visit six schools as well as teach in our partner school. We have agreed a joint project that will involve all children in both schools.. ACTIVEMARK 2008

 

 
         

Brize Norton Primary School has been awarded the Activemark 2008 for our exceptional delivery of the National Sports Strategy

  

         

AWARDS FOR ALL 2009

    
         

Earlier this year Mrs Rae applied for a grant through the Lottery funded Awards for All scheme. We have been successful in our bid for £5000 to provide opportunities for our children to take part in alternative sports at school. These include archery, fencing, team building and games. In addition to this the funding will allow us to provide healthy cooking classes and drama workshops. This is fantastic news! EUROPEAN PARTNERS VISIT BRIZE NORTON

 

JANUARY 2009
         

This term we have welcomed visitors from France, Germany and Spain to the school to plan our Comenius Project. The teachers had a chance to visit each class and came to a special assembly. The project aims for us to develop working relationships with schools in each of the partner countries, completing a joint project. This programme would last for two years and involve all children. We will hear from the British Council whether our application has been approved in July.

  

         

NEW YEAR ­ NEW TOPICS

    


 

This term all classes have begun new topics including Teddy Bears in Class 1, Castles in Class 2, The Firework Maker’s Daughter in Class 3 and Titanic in Class 4. Over the term you will be able to see some of our work on the class web pages. All classes have trips planned which we are all very excited about. These include trips to Warwick Castle and the New Theatre in Oxford
         

CHRISTMAS CONCERTS 2008

  

9TH & 10TH DECEMBER 2008
         

This year the Infants performed "Born in a Barn!"  This was a fantastic nativity enjoyed by all the children, staff, family and friends.  The children looked fantastic and sang brilliantly.  Well done Class 1 & 2.  See our pictures here.

The Juniors entertained us with "Sleeping Beauty’s Dream", a modern twist to the traditional pantomime.  It was an amazing performance full of laughter.  Thank you Class 3 & 4.  See our pictures here.

We are very proud of the effort all of the children put in to making these performances so entertaining to watch.  Well done again.

  

         

ARTS WEEK 2008 

  

3RD – 7TH NOVEMBER 2008
         

 

From the 3rd to 7th November we held our annual Arts Week. Our theme this year was ART PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE. During the week the children learnt about a range of traditional and modern art techniques as well as looking at the work of various artists. Throughout the week the children were encouraged to consider themselves as artists of the future. The children were all able to work with artists in school including Peter Massey from Zantium who produced a mosaic with all the children and Viv Jones from Daisy Roots who led parent and child clay sessions. At the end of the week we held an exhibition for all the parents. Read more and see more pictures here.

NO ENTRY ­ BUILDERS AT WORK

  

27TH OCTOBER 2008
         

During half term exciting work began on our Foundation Stage classroom. On Monday 27th October the builders moved in to make alterations to the classroom  including bigger windows and doors, a raised decked area and all weather canopy. This will mean that the children in Class One will be able to learn outside throughout the year. The children are so excited they can’t wait to play on their balcony! We hope the work will be completed in the next few weeks.

 

  

         

HARVEST FESTIVAL

  

8TH OCTOBER 2008
         

 

On the 8th October the whole school celebrated harvest at the church. Each class prepared a song, poem or shared work. Families donated produce which we have given to The Porch, a shelter for the homeless in Oxford. Thank you to all our families who came to this service or made food donations.  More photos here.

 
         

VIKING DAY

  

7TH OCTOBER 2008
         

On Tuesday 7th October, historian Dinah Starkey visited Class 3. The children came to school dressed as terrifying Vikings. During the day they used artefacts to answer and ask questions about the past, cooked Viking recipes and lots more. See more photos here.

  

         

UNDER 11 FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

  

2ND OCTOBER 2008
         

 

On Thursday 2nd October seven boys from Class 4 went to William Fletcher School in Yarnton to take part in a seven-a-side football tournament. Read Haydn's match report here.
 
         

WELCOME BACK ALL

  

3RD SEPTEMBER 2008
         

We have started another exciting year at school this week. New topics this year include Pirates, The Vikings and Our Global Village. In the first few days of the new term the children have played in the class pirate ship and become viking invaders. Everyone seems to be enjoying being back at school after fantastic holidays. ECO-SCHOOLS SILVER AWARD

    
         

 

The Eco-Team are pleased to announce that we have achieved the Silver Eco-Schools standard. Over the year we have been working hard to achieve our three targets:

1. To make the school grounds a great place for learning
2. To cut down on the amount of waste we create in school
3. To reduce the amount of energy we use in school.

All staff and children have worked hard to achieve our targets. Next year we are aiming for the Eco-Schools Green Flag. You can find out more information here.
         

ARTSMARK AWARD

    
         

 

We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded the Artsmark by the Arts Council England. This is awarded to schools in recognition of outstanding commitment to the arts. It is a benchmark for arts education provision. This year all the staff at Brize Norton Primary School have worked hard to provide quality experiences in art, music, dance and drama within our new creative curriculum.
