St Britius Church, Brize Norton

St Britius Church lies in the centre of Brize Norton village. The present church is Norman with 13th century additions. It was refurbished in 1868 with many Victorian embellishments. The tower contains a ring of six bells that need re-hanging and for safety’s sake are only rung on rare occasions. The church is a Grade II* listed building and is considered to be in a reasonable state of repair. The Methodist Church has recently closed.

St Britius Church serves as the Parish Church with a small congregation. There are 33 people on the church electoral roll, with a strong contingent who live in Carterton, and there have been between 35 and 45 people for several years. The congregation swells to over 60 at festivals such as Christmas, Easter and Harvest.

Church Services are held every Sunday with Holy Communion at 9.30 a.m., (to be moved forward to 9.15 a.m., to coordinate with St John’s). Evensong is held at 6 p.m., on the second and fourth Sundays of the month, and a midweek Eucharist/Compline is held on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Special services are held during the year. Junior Church joins the Holy Communion Service six times per year. The organ is played at Sunday and special services.

The Church uses the “Common Worship Traditional English Rite” which is the same as “Holy Communion Order One in Traditional Language” for the Holy Eucharist and is using the Modern English Rite once a month for a trial period. The new hymnbook used is “Hymns Old and New”, New Anglican Edition. Vestments are worn.

The Church has a very active Junior Church with around 25 youngsters. It meets regularly to prepare for the bi-monthly Junior Church Services in Church and holds a Christmas Party in the Village Hall and a Summer Outing.

In the past fifteen months the Church has seen 5 baptisms, 2 weddings and 3 funerals, though the number of weddings is likely to increase in the new setting.

There is a rota of readers for the first lesson at the Sunday Eucharist, also rotas for sides people and volunteer cleaners of the Church. The choir is small but enthusiastic.

The church finances are sufficient to cover the fabric of the church but do not extend to meeting all of its parish share. This can be remedied in the new setting. There is a gift aid scheme.

Fund raising events include a Christmas Raffle drawn after the candlelit carol service, a Harvest Supper, and various stalls at the Cricket Festival, Carterton Fun Day, and Foxbury Farm Lambing Weekend. There are also coffee mornings and wine and cheese suppers from time to time.

The congregation are very generous with donations for flowers and there is always at least one arrangement in church for all services outside of Lent and Advent, and many displays during festivals. The village takes part in The National Gardens Scheme for Charity and the Church is open and decorated with flowers for that occasion every year.

The Church is kept locked with the key accessible from the Churchwardens. There is a public footpath running through the churchyard and it would not be appropriate for the church to be left open.

The Church does not have the benefit of toilet facilities or running water. There are no facilities for the hard of hearing though the church is accessible to wheelchairs. Church meetings are held in the vestry and refreshments are served in an area in the North Aisle, for example hot mince pies and coffee after the Carol Service and wine and soft drinks at the Patronal Festival in November. Gatherings of any size, such as the Harvest Supper take place in the Village Hall. Car parking is also limited to a small area beside the War Memorial.

The graveyard adjacent to the church is closed, whilst the extension on the other side of the road is in use.
