Why did we create this website | The
Brize Norton Primary School established an ICT Club following the
re-launch of its school website in May
2004. From September 2004 ICT club members were drawn from Class 4
(years 5 & 6). The ICT club currently has 13 members and meets
after School as an after school club run by Mrs Julia Giddins, ICTC and
Class 3 teacher. Early in January 2005 the members decided to work on a project related to the Asian Tsunami disaster which was of special interest to many of their number. The members also discussed a name for the Club and chose BiNct - a play on the word Brize Norton and "ict". BiNct members sum up their aims as follows: |

When did we start this site | Our Tsunami Project was begun in February/March 2005, and gained momentum following contact with Lielan Smith since April. We agreed from the outset that we would have a separate site within School's own site, which in turn was linked with the Community Site for Brize Norton and Carterton developed by the Parish of Brize Norton and Carterton and run by Dr Phil Holmes a local resident and a friend of the school. | |
How did we create this site | As
explained above, the Brize Norton Primary School website was created as
part of an initiative to create an integrated website for the communities
of Brize Norton and Carterton. This site is hosted, alongside
others, as part of brizenorton.org.uk a not-for-profit site which
integrates local information using shared facilities, notably PERL and
JAVA scripts that provides a series of integrated calendars, etc. Phil
Holmes works closely with the school on a voluntary basis in a variety of
ways.
We are looking forwards to BiNct Club members being able to create their own web pages and uploading these directly to a school site. In the interim members have prepared materials offline (word files, images from colour magic, and web pages using Hotdog Junior) and these have been uploaded on their behalf. Final editing has been done using MS Frontpage and a number of graphics packages (Coreldraw, Paintshop Pro and Animator7). Common Style Sheets (CSS files), tables, javascript and other devices have been used to aid layout and consistency, though it should be stressed that decisions on use of fonts, colours, backgrounds, etc., have been made by BiNct members. We followed the School's policy regarding Internet and Website safety which conforms with the DfES guidelines. You can click on most images to make them larger - this helps those with eyesight problems. We have also used text boxes associated with the pictures to say which BiNct Club member worked on the picture and how it was produced. This complements the annotations in the text so that the reader can see how each of the 13 members contributed. |

Future Improvements | BiNct
members would like to be able to create and upload their own web pages
with the skills they have acquired. This will be possible with
improvements in networking and internet access within the school together
with improved software. It will also require cooperation to enable
web pages created in a school environment to be exported to a third-party
site such as that run by brizenorton.org.uk.
BiNct are keen to find ways to link a webcam to enable communication with other schools such as "Stepping Stones" - the school they are corresponding with in Sri Lanka. They would also like to explore ways to use sound and video. Members of the BiNct acknowledge that they have a lot to learn but have enjoyed researching and building up the information, doing simple animations, maintaining the school diary, etc., etc. |

Problems we overcame | We have met and to some extent overcome a number of problems in the limited time available. Clearly these include access to and networking of computers within the school so that the 13 active BiNct members can work effectively and deliver materials that can be put directly onto the school website. The use of the class white board has greatly assisted. | |
